WHAT IS COLOSTRUM - It is your first breast milk, and the one the baby will get during the first days after birth. It is also known as liquid gold because it is perfectly balanced for all your newborn's needs: it contains proteins, antibodies, hormones, vitamins, as well as other developmental factors. This composition will help your baby deal with common circumstances after birth, such as weight loss, hypoglycemia, high bilirubin levels (jaundice), gut functioning, and will even kick-start their immune system. COLLECTING COLOSTRUM - Having a colostrum stash will help your newborn get those power nutrients as soon as possible and will also help feed babies in the NICU or babies with difficulties in latching. With the approval of your care provider, you can start collecting colostrum around 36/37 weeks pregnant, starting with a gentle breast manual massage. Colostrum will come out in the form of thick, sticky drops. This is the reason why it is so much beneficial to have small silicone collectors to catch them and store them safely.
